Life in the Hotel... Part 3

So if you are wondering what I do all day with 3 kids in a hotel room, here is a little snippet! Nap time is pretty sacred for us, so while Tori is sleeping, Isaac and Daphne watch a little movie and then we do school work and practice reading. In the morning or afternoon, we usually head outside for a bit. There are lots of American military families staying in our hotel, most waiting for housing to become available here in Germany. We have found lots of other kids to play with, which has been a huge blessing. We knew right away that the bigger kids would need a way to expend all their energy, so we headed to the thrift shop on base and picked them up some second hand bikes to use while we are here. Unfortunately, all they had in Isaac's size was a purple bike with sparkles. He's so great though, he doesn't mind- he's just thankful for something to do! And actually, the other boys at the hotel are often asking to ride it!

While the kids are riding their bikes, I'm usually chasing Tori around, trying to keep her safe around the cement stairs and the metal stairs and the elevator. Sometimes, I can distract her with the rocks so I can sit down for a minute!

Just behind our hotel, there is a great walking trail. I try to "jog" while the kids ride their bikes, which ends up something like this: Run to keep up with Isaac. Stop and wait for Daphne. Run to catch up with Isaac, stop and pick up Tori's toy. Repeat several times. At least I work up a sweat!

Some other sights near our hotel- they told us that Wicked would be playing near our hotel and they meant it. The building on the right side of this picture is our hotel and while the kids are riding their bikes we can often hear the cast rehearsing and warming up. Matt and the kids even saw "Dr. Dillamond" all decked out in his goat costume sitting on a bench outside.

We are also living in the city that is the headquarters for Mercedes, so we can always see their symbol...

Life In The Hotel...Part 2

A few weeks ago, Tori started doing this at mealtime. It's pretty dang cute. (Remember if you receive this in an email, you need to go to the blogsite to view the video! http://mattlaurahunter.blogspot.com/

Five Years Ago...

Five Years Ago today, I almost gave birth on the bathroom floor. Then I screamed through a ride in the ambulance to the hospital and, seven minutes later, delivered Daphne Faith Hunter. It was one of the most dramatic scenes of my life (with the possible exception of my recent weekend in Paris! J/K) Her delivery should have been my first clue. Daphne is every bit as dramatic as the circumstances of her birth. She is passionate, demanding, powerful, brilliant, clever, observant, intuitive and beautiful. Today she told Isaac that he could not play with any boy toys, only girly ones because it is her birthday. But she also said, "Mommy, Thank you for my perfect birthday." Although she is challenging almost every minute of every day, she could not possibly be more loved. I cannot imagine our lives without her amazing spirit. The Lord knew we needed this child in our family and I am grateful for His trust and providence. Daphne is well... unique. She is sun and rain; fire and ice. We adore her and could not imagine our family without her! We love you, Daphne. We celebrate your life this day!

Life in the Hotel- Part 1

Okay, so I am the first to admit that our life this summer isn't all glamour and glitz while touring Europe. During the week (Monday - Friday), I am with three children in (albeit a very spacious) hotel suite. So, our bed has become sort of the gathering/tickling/wrestling space. Here are two of my little monkeys wrestling on the bed. And yes, they often fall off and bonk their heads. But in the hotel, we get our kicks where we can!
Some other things we've been up to....
Little Miss Victoria has been chatting on the phone... She picks up anything electronic and remotely rectangular and does this; remote controls, cell phones, cameras, it's pretty cute!

And Isaac lost another tooth! He was pretty proud of himself. And I was (once again) very thankful to have Matthew here to deal with this task that, for some nonsensical reason, turns my stomach every time!

Recently, we took the kids to see Ice Age 3 the movie theatre on base, which has a cry room at the top. I haven't had any shoes here for Tori because I didn't really plan well. (She wasn't walking at all, and her feet have always been too chubby for shoes, so I didn't even think about it!) All I had was one pair of little satin pink shoes that barely stay on her feet. Anyway, While at the theatre, she wanted to walk around the cry room, which was DISgusting, so I put her little shoes on her. I figured they were probably bugging her because they did not fit and so when one fell off, I just went and took off the other one also. Her response? Throwing herself down on the floor and screaming until I put them back on! No joke. Then, once I did get them back on, she kept walking over to the little lights that shone down on the ground and sticking her foot into the light so that she could see them! It was too cute! Looks like we might have another little miss priss on our hands! Here are the shoes:

Here she is admiring them once again!

LegoLand Deutschland (including the Best Picture Ever!!)

This weekend, we decided to take it easy and go to Legoland. I know-life is pretty hectic when Legoland is considered restful.... but it really was. It felt much less like we were in a foreign country, which was a mental break for a little while. This was also a break from all the historical sight-seeing that can wear on the children after a while....
So here we are staring into the glaring sunshine at the entrance! The Lego representation of Albert Einstein. You must zoom in on Daphne's face, "Who is this guy?!"

The spinner ride... (the couple sitting with them are our friends Steve and Liz)
After the spinning ride, Matt and the kids wanted to hit a roller coaster and I waited at the bottom with Tori and Steve and Liz's kids while they all went on the big kid ride. Steve and Liz came off first and told me that Matt (my Matthew) was buying a picture. What?! Has the world as I know it changed forever? Are pigs flying through Legoland? So I'm thinking, what is in this picture? What could possess my husband to purchase an over-priced, theme-park photograph? and then I saw it:
(Drumroll, please)...... Best. Picture. Ever. :
You have got to click on the pic so you can see Daphne up close. Tell me you looked at that without laughing, and I will give you 1 Euro. (that's like a buck 40!)

After the roller coaster, we headed to Legoland Atlantis, which is basically a big aquarium:

In the middle of LegoLand, is Lego City- A magnificent display of Lego Miniatures of the biggest and most famous locations in Germany:
Our favorite was the Allianz Arena, which is full of tiny Lego People, Cameras that flash, a working Jumbotron and a detailed Parking Garage. It was pretty amazing...

Tori liked the Lego Creations as well. Notice her shoes that are too small? Stay tuned for a funny post about those!

With all the Lego creations around, my children spent much of the day coming up with clever ways to pose with them. Every single one of these poses were thought up by one of my sweet kids. I think they are pretty clever. And cute, too.

Tori spent much of her day in the stroller with Steve and Liz's baby, Josh:

After lots more fun and some ice cream , we headed to the boats, which was pretty hysterical to watch. I wish I had videoed rather than just taken pictures. But basically, Isaac was having a little trouble with the concept of being responsible for pushing the gas pedal and steering, and seemed to struggle with multi-tasking those. At one point, Steve accidentally bumped Isaac around so that he was going the wrong way, and Matt decided to bump Steve so that he was going the wrong way. Isaac got turned around, but Steve got caught going backward because there was a long line of little girls going the right way just behind him. All the while, the guy in charge of the ride is giving out stern messages in German, which I'm pretty sure were directed at Matt and Steve, and could only have meant, "Please STOP ramming the boats!"

Nine Years Later....

Nine Years, 2 college degrees, 7 homes, 3 precious children, 5 jobs later, here we are. I cannot express the joys that our marriage has brought to me. Matthew is more than I imagined; truly loyal, faithful, stalwart and loving. God has truly blessed me by bringing him to my life; by leading us to one another. I am so grateful that we listened.... and for the promise of hope in our future because of Him. Happy Anniversary, Matthew. I love you.
** I couldn't even get a picture of us together on our anniversary. I guess that's what happens when you take three kids to Europe...

Vienna

For our third day in Austria, we headed to Vienna. We wouldn't have a whole lot of time there, so we wanted to hit some of the big sights. Our first stop was Schonbrunn Palace, which was the summer residence of Austria's Royal Family, The Hapsburgs.
I have to say that I am enjoying the review in World History... I didn't really pay as much attention to Mr. Axe as I should have, I suppose. Our children have been soaking up most of what we have been teaching them about the World around them. They were super excited to go to the palace, which included a 40 room tour. I must say that after about 20 rooms, you kind of get the point. Daphne noticed this and spent much of the time complaining that this palace doesn't look anything like Jasmine's palace.
Isaac was a real trooper and listened to the Audioguide- Matt was great with him, pointing out things that would interest him and asking him questions to see if he understood. Victoria was nestled snug into the wrap and stayed fairly content.... this time!
This pic is from the back balcony of the Palace looking out at the grounds. You can barely see the kids and me in the bottom center right portion of the pic. Just to give you an idea of the enormity of it all.
The back of the palace, which really didn't look one bit like Jasmine's palace...

The children and me in front of the beautiful fountain in the back of othe palace... Notice all the squinting. I was all prepared for rain after the downpour in Salzburg and wore my jeans and running shoes and ended up pouring with sweat and squinting into the glaring sunshine. My new plan is to go out prepared for the rain so that it will avoid us...

The kids loved this fountain because all of the people are mermaids and mermen and even the horses have webbed hooves and scales. This was their favorite part- I think because the water from the fountain splashed on them and cooled them off.
This won't be a Christmas Card photo or anything, but we are all here at least:

After the Schonbrunn Palace, we ran back to the hotel to check out and have a drink. It was at this point that we used the hotel ice machine to fill the top of our very small cooler. We stayed in a Marriott, so they actually had an ice machine. We weren't sure how they felt about us using about four liters of ice, though, since they act like ice is gold around here. Matt and I took turns doing the covert op to get the ice from the ice machine down in the lobby!! (Did I mention that when we were in Salzburg we tried several gas stations and when we FINALLY found one with bagged ice we paid about $6 for a teen ytiny bag?!) We had no idea where we would even find ice again, so we went ahead and used the Marriott ice machine.
After we got the ice all settled, I decided to change because it was so warm and sunny... what could be the danger?
We checked out and drove into downtown Vienna, in search of a place to have lunch! We parked just next to the Parlament Building...
Here is Isaac out front:

We walked through Volksgarten, which made me think of my sweet Marcy !
I pretended it was your garden , Marcy! Very lovely...
Many people have commented to me on how Daphne poses in every picture. The complete priss. And then I was looking at our pictures from Vienna, and well, I guess I know where she got that! I never claimed to be anything but prissy, so I guess I'll just accept our fate. We'll be girly-girls together, I suppose, huh, Daph?

So we marched through half of Vienna trying to find this one particular restaraunt and the kids were starving and we couldn't find it, so we finally settled for this little Italian place (which I did not get a picture of, for some reason) with outdoor seating- which is a must for us. We are so loud and our stroller is E-normous (eating outdoors makes us slightly less conspicuous). So we sat down to eat and waited and waited and waited for our food to arrive. It finally came and all the sudden we heard thunder and ... the heavens were opened! Not a little drop, drop, drop , then rain; but all the sudden we were sitting in a downpour! What was most amazing was not the rain, but that everybody screamed! As if aliens were attacking or something. It was hysterical. We were at the table closest to the door and people were stampeding over Matt who was juggling dishes and ushering in the children. It was a pretty comical scene. We ate the rest of our lunch indoors and by the time we were done it was just drizzling.
We marched through Vienna to find the Hapsburg's winter palace, which is E-normous, even moreso than our stroller. Which, incidentally, did not fit in the elevator for this particular venue. So poor Matthew had to fold the gigantic buggy up and carry it up like four flights of stairs so we could go through another palace. I'm not sure why we felt that we needed to see this palace when just about half of the first palace had felt like enough, but we did it. And once again, Daphne got pretty bored about 1/3 of the way through, this was a little more challenging because Tori was very unhappy through much of this tour as well. Poor little dear. She just doesn't understand why she can't crawl through all of the perfectly preserved rooms...
On the way, we found this fellow. He's a real person painted gold and pretending to be Mozart... I had to go stand by him because the children were a little too creeped out. He would stand there like a statue and then all the sudden start whistling Symphony Number 40 or something!
You'll all be glad to note that we resisted actually going inside this cathedral and just settled for some pics of the outside!

After our tour of the Winter residence, we were on a mission to find some ice cream. Since I have been so vocal about the difficulties of not being drinkers here (beer is cheaper than water- literally), I will be just as vocal in praising the ice cream. We can always find excellent quality, inexpensive ice cream around here. Not a good thing for my hips, but I'm not complaining just yet!
We did eventually find some ice cream- and here are some sights from along the way:

We packed up and started our 6 hour trip back to Germany!
